If you think you've seen Mt. Rainier, you'll discover a new mountain in Fred Milkie's book Alone Around the Mountain.
I haven't travelled much, but I have to believe that Mount Ranier is one of the most magnificent sights to behold in the world.
Rising from the relatively low trrain of its surroundings, the ice-covered peak dominates the horizon and is seen from miles away in all directions. Although I've been to the climbing camps at around 10,000 feet, it always struck me how much of the Mountain's identity is lost the higher up I went; there is simply less to behold. Ascending the steep grade, all I can see of the Mountain is the part I am standing on.
These pictures are not about looking down from the top. They are about what you see as you walk the trails that wind around and up and over the shoulders of the Mountain, as you wearily trudge up another switchback to find that your next step suddenly rewards you effort so your heart wants to burst from your chest. I want a person to look at these pictures and be able to say, "I could be there."
