Book Description
The invitation was to race for the first time, aboard Eagle, on a two-hundred-mile circumnavigation of a wilderness island. The race would pit the crew not only against other sailboats but also against powerful currents and shifts of wind and weather—and require them to work together as a team. It would stretch Migael Scherer's limits as a sailor and, she hoped, be a turning point in a life that had almost ended in a violent, near-fatal attack three years before.
Capturing the immediacy of the race—the jockeying of sails and rigging to harness speed—Scherer's account takes in the enormity of the ocean, the height of the mountains, and the violence and beauty of both the human and natural worlds. She tacks back over the course of her life up to the race, revealing a marriage made rocky by the aftermath of her attack as well as memories both satisfying and haunting. Spirited and agile, lithe yet strong, Scherer's writing makes this voyage an adventure to read, a moving record of life's unpredictability and the possibility of joy.
