Book Description
The Jade Coast is an easy-to-read explanation of the connections of life of the north Pacific Ocean. It begins by explaining some basic ideas in ecology pertaining to the shore, and then begins on a journey far out to sea. It explains how wind and weather trigger seasonal enrichment of the ocean, why the lives of albatross from Hawaii, whales from Mexico, and salmon from coastal rivers intersect on the western shores of North America. The reader then moves to rocky headlands, along sand beaches, over mudflats and finally enters river estuaries. Along the way, connections between the lives of the wonderfully bizarre creatures that inhabit the shores are explained among personal anecdotes from 30 years of research. The book ends with a wish that the beginnings of an understanding of connections on the Jade Coast will lead to more cultural expressions of this remarkable corner of the Earth.
