Book Description

“Mom, what was it really like in the OLDEN DAYS?”

Author Thilda Wennes Egertson’s children, Sylvia (Gildenvan), Paul (Egertson) and Margarethe (Calfas) have often asked her this question.

As she pens her memories of olden times, the author endeavors here to give us a glimpse of America during the first quarter of the 20th Century, neither to praise nor blame as to “WHAT THEY DID AND HOW THEY DID IT.” In so doing, Thilda Wennes Egertson has also given her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren a window on the world of their heritage.

Buggy on the Barn Roof is a friendly running commentary covering the years 1900-1925, as remembered and researched with a light-hearted yet serious Christian touch. Here readers will find a colorful anthology of anecdotes gathered from the arenas of sport, politics, literature, religion, education, technology and social progress. Within the context of those facts and fables, the more intimate memories of one family’s joys and sorrows are shared. Bathed in faith and patriotism, Buggy on the Barn Roof is a Christian diary of the rural American experience.

Buggy on the Barn Roof is not intended as a biography because in many ways it is as much about others whose roots are embedded in the soil of rural America as it is about the author and her family. They invite you to read over their shoulder as you both imagine and discover what life was really like in the OLDEN DAYS!

About the Author

Thilda Wennes Egertson is the mother of four children and was the wife of H.O. Egertson, a Lutheran pastor, evangelist, chaplain and counselor, for sixty-two years. In their earliest days, she worked as a legal secretary to help him through college in Decorah, IA and theological seminary in St. Paul, MN.

While raising her family, she continued her own education earning a BA in Psychology at UCLA (1950); an MA in Special Education at Los Angeles State College (1955); and studying Library Science at the University of Minnesota (1955-56).

She began her teaching career in Parochial schools of the American Lutheran Church in Los Angeles and North Hollywood (1950-1953). Then for twenty years she worked in the Los Angeles Unified School District as a Special Education teacher with developmentally disabled students and, for her last ten years, as a high school librarian. During that time she earned four California State Teaching Credentials.

While on sabbatical leaves, she twice traveled around the world organizing Theological Seminary Libraries in South Africa, Nigeria, Ethiopia, New Guinea and Mexico City. She also donated sets of English language encyclopedias for the use of missionary children in several locations. On a later trip to India, she visited with Mother Teresa and her Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta.

Following retirement, she spent twenty-two years as part-time Librarian and faculty member at California Lutheran Bible School in Los Angeles and Anaheim, CA (1972-1994). On her 90th birthday she fully retired and began writing this book. Now in her 103rd year, she lives with her daughter Sylvia in Anacortes, WA.

Thilda Wennes Egertson is listed in Who’s Who in America: Millennium Edition.
